Truth-or-Consequences
is located in southwestern New Mexico and is home to several natural hot springs. It is commonly called T or C by locals. As of the 2000 census, the population of Truth or Consequences was 7,289. Originally called Hot Springs, the city changed its name to Truth or Consequences, after a popular radio program. In 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the radio quiz show announced he would air the popular program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Upon hearing this, the New Mexico State Tourist Bureau relayed the news to the manager of the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce and a special election was held to change the name of the town. City officials saw it as an opportunity for free advertising, as well as a way to distinguish the community from many other towns with the same name of "Hot Springs." Ralph Edwards came to the town during the first weekend of May for the next fifty years for the Fiesta, which included a beauty contest, a parade, and a stage show. The city still celebrates Fiesta each year on the first Saturday of May. People come to Truth or Consequences to soak in the hot springs and to visit one of three nearby state parks. Recreation in the area includes golf, hiking and fishing, rafting and kayaking. In addition, the Geronimo Trail Scenic Byway is headquartered in Truth or Consequences. This road climbs over 4,000 feet from desert up through forested mountain passes, with some of the most spectacular scenery in the state.

Northwestern New Mexico is a region of primarily high desert country, dominated by sandstones and lava flows. Average January temperature is about 35°F (2°C) and July temperatures range from about 78°F (26°C) at high elevations to around 92°F (33°C) at lower elevations. Average annual precipitation averages over 20 inches in the higher elevations. Nearly one-half the annual rainfall comes during July and August, and thunderstorms are common in the summer. Snow is much more frequent in the north than in the south. The northern mountain regions can receive up to 100 inches.
