Placitas is an old village located in Sandoval County near Albuquerque, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,452 residents. Placitas has become a popular retirement center due to the near-perfect weather and outstanding scenery. The region enjoys four distinct seasons, yet without harsh extremes in either winter or summer. Many homes look north toward the hills and mesas, all the way to the Jemez range and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains north of Santa Fe. Forest Service nature trails surround Placitas, it's near good hospitals and just 25 minutes from the Albuquerque International Airport. All good reasons to visit or settle permanently. The Anasazi Fields Winery sits on the western edge of the village of Placitas. Orchards and vineyards surround the winery and are watered by a spring-fed irrigation system that dates back over a thousand years to a time when the Anasazi people farmed the Placitas Valley. Nearby are petroglyphs which have been reproduced on the wine labels of the Anasazi Fields Winery. Sandoval County is very diverse culturally and geographically. The county has grown but is still mostly rural and sparsely populated. Aside from Placitas, it includes several other small towns, the chartered community of Cochiti Lake, all or portions of nine Indian pueblos, three Navajo Chapters and part of the Jicarilla Apache Reservation.
