Velarde is surrounded by the Carson National Forest, Santa Fe National Forest and Valles Caldera National Preserve. The community of Velarde is also home to the Black Mesa Winery, which sits on the main highway between Santa Fe and Taos. The forested mountains offer a variety of outdoor recreation, such as fly-fishing, hiking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, kayaking and biking. In winter, there is skiing and snowboarding at nearby Taos, Angel Fire and Santa Fe. Other attractions near Velarde include the Anasazi site at Bandelier National Monument and Puye Cliff Dwellings. A few hours away you'll find Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde National Park. The charming, old west village of Chama offers historical walking tours, fossil hunting and panning for gold. Chama is also home to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, which takes visitors on a scenic 64-mile ride. Velarde is a short drive to Ghost Ranch Living Museum, home of artist Georgia O'Keeffe.
