Las-Vegas is a small town in San Miguel County in northeast New Mexico. Once two separate municipalities (both named Las Vegas,) today, west Las Vegas ("Old Town,") and east Las Vegas ("New Town,") are divided by the Gallinas River. The two areas of town retain distinct characters and separate (rival) school districts. The population of Las Vegas is approximately 15,000. Founded in 1835 by Mexican settlers, Las Vegas was the first town that wagon trains on the Santa Fe Trail reached after 600 miles of tough travel from Kansas. Due to this key location on the Santa Fe Trail, and it's location on the edge of the eastern plains at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the town also became host to outlaws and rough riders, such as Kit Carson, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and more. The towns history is preserved in the city of Las Vegas Museum & Rough Riders collection. The town also has a large number of historic structures, with over 900 listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Las Vegas is surrounded by wilderness and recreation, including hiking, fishing, water-skiing and boating at nearby Storrie Lake. Traditional crafts and modern art co-exist in shops all over town with a concentration along the Bridge Street/Plaza Historic District. The town is also host to several special events, such as the Fourth of July Fiesta and the People's Fair in August.
