Gallinas is a small community located in Rio Arriba County in north-central New Mexico. It is near the town of Abiquiu, about 50 miles north of Santa Fe. A major attraction in the Gallina area is the Ghost Ranch Retreat Center, which is the subject of many of the landscapes painted by American artist, Georgia O'Keeffe. It is also the location of her home and is where her ashes are scattered. The area is filled with history and the natural beauty of the massive red cliffs and mesas, and the beautiful carved canyons. This is the beauty that was immortalized in so many of O'Keeffe's paintings. The tiny town of Abiquiu sits alongside Highway 84, which is the road that connects Santa Fe to Chama, New Mexico, then Chama to Pagosa Springs and on to the Wolf Creek Ski Area via Highway 160 East. Abiquiu Lake, which is also near Gallina, is a recreational lake used for various water sports, such as swimming, fishing, boating and water-skiing. Other attractions include the Ghost Ranch Living Museum and the Echo Amphitheatre, a natural amphitheatre, located in Rio Arriba County about 17 miles west of Abiquiu.
