Sandia-Park
is a community located in Bernalillo County in the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The community was named for the nearby Sandia Mountains (sandia being the Spanish word for "watermelon,") and is also near the Cibola National Forest. Aside from all of the exciting museums, shopping and dining in the city of Albuquerque, the Sandia Mountains offer visitors an abundance of outdoor recreational activities. The Sandias are popular for hiking, hang gliding, mountain biking and climbing, and skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. In addition, the Turquoise Trail on the east side of the mountains is a scenic highway that runs from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, and the Sandia Tramway takes visitors to the 10,000-foot mountain peak. The Sandia Park area is also filled with history. Sandia Cave is thought to have been inhabited 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. The cave can be accessed via a half-mile trail in Las Huertas Canyon, on the northeast side of the range, near Placitas, New Mexico. Examples of previous Pueblo settlements, now unoccupied, include Tijeras Pueblo and Paako Pueblo, both founded approximately 700 years ago. Sandia Pueblo is a modern pueblo, abutting the Sandia Mountains on the northwest side of the range.

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
