Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico, with a population of approximately 522,000. It is located in Bernalillo County in the central part of the state, straddling the Rio Grande River. The Sandia Mountains run along the eastern side of the city and the river flows through it, running north to south. As of June 2007, Albuquerque was the 6th fastest growing city in the United States. It is home to the University of New Mexico and has more than 300 museums, festivals and other attractions. There are numerous art galleries, specialty shops, boutiques and restaurants located in downtown, uptown and Old Town Albuquerque. Old Town also features an intriguing ghost tour performed by the Southwest Ghosthunters Association. A few of the festivals hosted by the city are the Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival, Albuquerque Wine Festival and the Folk Music Festival. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is one of the largest hot air balloon gatherings in the world. Founded in 1972, it's held each October and hosts 700 balloons in a 9-day event that attracts thousands. The Balloon Fiesta is also one of the most photographed events in the world. Each year, Albuquerque also hosts the Gathering of Nations PowWow, one of the largest in the western hemisphere, attracting over 3,000 dancers, singers and drummers from 500 tribes across Canada, the United States, Central and South America. This event includes the Indian Traders' Market. Other attractions in the city include the National Hispanic Cultural Center of New Mexico, and New Mexico Jazz Workshop, which presents a variety of programs like Salsa Under the Stars, Blues Fest and Summer Music Festival.
