Cloudcroft
is a village located in southern New Mexico within the Lincoln National Forest. It sits at 8,600 feet above sea level and has a population of approximately 800 residents. In 2002, Fodors named Cloudcroft as the Number 3 "Most Overlooked and Underrated Destination Spot." Indeed, tourism is the mainstay of the economy for Cloudcroft. Otherwise, two large ground terminals for the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System are located near the town, and are a source of high-technology employment. Among the many outdoor recreational activities near Cloudcroft are hiking, fishing, horseback riding, golf, biking, swimming, alpine and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snow tubing. The village of Cloudcroft is home to three festivals. May Fair is the kickoff for the summer season on Memorial Day weekend. July Jamboree is the newest and smallest of the festivals, held on the 4th of July. Octoberfest is the third event, and is considered the final outdoor event before the winter snows come to the mountains and is the close of the traditional tourist season. All of the festivals offer arts and crafts, live music and other entertainment and lots of great food. Cloudcroft is only 16 miles from the Space Museum, Alameda Park Zoo and Toy Train Depot in Alamogordo, New Mexico. It's also approximately 40 miles from casino gambling and the White Sands National Monument. Cloudcroft is 90 miles from El Paso and the Mexican border.

Cloudcroft Weather & Climate

South Central New Mexico has an arid, subtropical climate. Winters alternate between cool and windy weather following trough and frontal passages, with warm, sunny periods in between. Light frosts occur many nights. Spring months are warm and can be windy. Short-lived dust storms are possible. Summers begin with hot weather, with some extended periods of over 100 °F (38 °C) weather not uncommon, while the latter half of the summer seeing increased humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, with slightly lower daytime temperatures. The weather cools down quickly in the Autumn and precipitation decreases. Most winter moisture is in the form of rain. Though some light snow falls most winters, it stays on the ground for a few hours, at most.
