Alamogordo
is located in Otero County in south-central New Mexico. It is a desert community, lying in the Tularosa Basin and bordered on the east by the Sacramento Mountains. Alamogordo is the closest city to Holloman Air Force Base. As of 2000, the population was 35,582. Alamogordo is considered the primary service and retail center of Otero County. Skiing and gambling are available in nearby Mescalero and Cloudcroft. Alamogordo is home to the New Mexico Museum of Space History, which houses artifacts related to space flight and also contains the International Space Hall of Fame. Other museums in town include the Alamogordo Museum of History, the American Armed Forces Museum and the Shroud Exhibit and Museum, located in White Sands Mall. The Alameda Park Zoo, which is the oldest zoo in the U.S. Southwest, is located in the city and several Union-Apache battles were fought near Oliver Lee State Park. The Flickinger Center for Performing Arts is a restored theater in Alamogordo that hosts concerts and live performances by touring groups throughout the year. Alamogordo is also home to several parks - both large and small. Alameda Park is shaded by cottonwood trees, and at the south end of the park is Alameda Park Zoo and at the north end is The Toy Train Depot, a railroad and toy train museum. Also nearby are several national and state parks, including Oliver Lee Memorial State Park and Lincoln National Forest, which offer camping, hiking, fishing and picnicking.

Alamogordo Weather & Climate

South Central New Mexico has an arid, subtropical climate. Winters alternate between cool and windy weather following trough and frontal passages, with warm, sunny periods in between. Light frosts occur many nights. Spring months are warm and can be windy. Short-lived dust storms are possible. Summers begin with hot weather, with some extended periods of over 100 °F (38 °C) weather not uncommon, while the latter half of the summer seeing increased humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, with slightly lower daytime temperatures. The weather cools down quickly in the Autumn and precipitation decreases. Most winter moisture is in the form of rain. Though some light snow falls most winters, it stays on the ground for a few hours, at most.
