Socorro is a historic town located in Socorro County in central New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the population was 8,879. It sits in the Rio Grande Valley at an elevation of 4,579 feet. In 1598, Juan de Onate led a group of Spanish settlers through the Jornada del Muerto desert, which ends just south of the present day city of Socorro. As the Spaniards emerged from the desert, Piro Indians of the Teypana Pueblo gave them food and water. Therefore, the Spaniards renamed this place "Socorro," which means "help" or "aid." The city of Socorro is home to many artists and musicians. Live music is played weekly at local bars and restaurants, including the Capitol Bar, Socorro Springs Brew Pub and the Manzanares Street Coffeehouse. Also, many musicians visit Socorro as part of New Mexico's Tech's Performing Arts Series. Other cultural offerings include music, theater, dance and family entertainment at the intimate Macey Center. Hiking, camping, rock climbing, picnicking and bird watching are available at nearby San Lorenzo Canyon, Box Canyon and Water Canyon Campground. Escondida Lake Park offers fishing and camping, RV hookups, tent camping and picnic shelters. There is also a dirt bike and ATV area near Socorro that overlooks the Rio Grande Valley and Bosque, and a scenic mountain bike trail known as Cerrillos del Coyote Loop.
