Silver-City is a town in Grant County, New Mexico in the southwestern part of the state. As of the 2000 census, the population was 10,545 residents. It is the home of Western New Mexico University. This is an area that offers something for everyone, from fly-fishing and off-road touring to lively festivals and historic museums. Silver City is home to a beautiful historic district and a thriving arts district. The town also operates the Silver City Museum, which is housed in the recently-restored 1881 Mansard/Italianate H.B. Ailman House and has a modern collections wing and changing exhibits gallery. Silver City hosts dozens of special events each year. Just a few of these include the Red Paint Powwow, Chocolate Fantasia, the Celebration of Spring Festival, 4th of July Parade and Festivities, Silver City Film Festival and Victorian Frontier Christmas. Outdoor recreational activities are abundant and include fishing, camping, hiking, golf, cycling and wonderful birding opportunities. Other things to do in the area include visiting the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, which offers a glimpse of the lives and homes of the Mogollon culture. These ancient people lived in the Gila Wilderness from the 1280s through the 1300s. It is surrounded by the Gila National Forest and lies at the edge of the Gila Wilderness, the nations first designated wilderness area. Other places of interest near Silver City include City of Rocks State Park and Bear Canyon Lake.

Silver City Weather & Climate

Southwestern New Mexico's weather is classified as semi-arid and is one of the area's biggest draws. Winters are comfortable, with an average high of 55 degrees. Summers are warm but with low humidity. Both spring and autumn are mild, with more wind in spring. Though it does occasionally snow, it usually melts away with the afternoon sunshine. With less than ten inches of rainfall per year, sunny skies prevail and outdoor activities are never canceled due to weather. Another bonus of this semi-arid climate is that southwestern New Mexico has absolutely brilliant sunsets.
